Tier list FAQ
Quick answers about how civilizations are ranked, where the data comes from, and how to read the tier bands.
How often is the AoE2 tier list updated?
The tier list refreshes continuously — every time a new ranked match finishes and gets parsed, civ win rates update. The page pulls the latest aggregate on each load, so you always see the current meta rather than a weekly snapshot.
How are S, A, B, C, and D tiers decided?
Tiers are pure win-rate bands: S ≥ 53.0%, A ≥ 51.5%, B ≥ 50.0%, C ≥ 48.5%, and D below 48.5%. This keeps the grouping objective — a civ moves up or down only when its ranked win rate actually crosses a band boundary.
Do the rankings change at different ELO ranges?
Yes, significantly. Civs that reward micro-heavy play climb at 1600+, while easier-to-execute civs over-perform at 1000–1200. Use the ELO filter above the tier list to see the meta at your bracket — that's the ranking that actually matters for your games.
Why does the ranking differ between 1v1 and Team games?
Team games reward flank vs. pocket specialists, bonus-sharing team synergies (like Goths' supplies), and economy-heavy civs. Switch the mode selector between RM 1v1, Team, Empire Wars, and Death Match to see how the same civ ranks in each format.
What data feeds these civilization win rates?
Every ranked ladder match from the public match feed — no curated samples, no picks-only subsets. Each civ's record against every other civ is aggregated, then collapsed into the overall win rate shown here. The same source feeds the statistics table and matchup matrix.
Is a civ with a 52% win rate actually 'S-tier'?
Within AoE2's compressed range, yes. Because civs are balanced, 52% is a meaningful edge across tens of thousands of games. S-tier means reliably advantaged in the current patch — not unbeatable. A 47% 'D-tier' civ still wins plenty of games in the hands of a player who knows its strengths.
